Overview

The idea behind these online practice groups is that they can be community practice groups, an opportunity to practice and develop skills, processes, and structures of empathic communication that build empathic community with people in your life — family, work/organization, friends, and other communities to which you belong. The practice groups provide interactive learning and practice in communication components of language and attentional distinctions based in the science of mindfulness, compassion, emotional and social intelligence, positive and depth psychology, and neuroscience. The group also provides valuable community support and caring connection for dealing with life's challenges. You form your own group and John will work with your group for the first 4-8 weeks providing learning and practice with the skills and maps, and sharing his 20 years of experience with this work.

The approach to communication comes out of John's Mediate Your Life (MYL) body work, which is based in the international work of Compassionate Communication (Nonviolent Communication/NVC) and the language of universal human needs. These skills of communicating with ourselves and others builds the capacity for well being, resilience, and resourcefulness, and strengthens the ability to work together more optimally and respond effectively to difficulties, challenges, and conflicts (inner and outer). The learning is experiential and practice oriented, and is applied to real experiences and situations in your life and work. The practice groups are offered on the Zoom video conferencing platform, which can be accessed by computer and also by phone.

The way it works to create one of these online practice groups is for you to gather 3 or more people committed to starting a group with you, then send an email to "Contact John" (link below) to schedule the sessions. Once the sessions are scheduled, each of you register and make a payment ("Register" buttons below) for John to work with your group for the first 4-8 weeks to support learning the skills, processes, and structures and how to practice together (the number of weeks John works with your group depends on the number of people in the group, i.e. 4 people = 4 weeks, 8 people or more = 8 weeks). After the 4-8 sessions with John, you continue practicing on your own for as long as you'd like, and you can ask John to come back for additional support at any time. If there are people new to John and this work in the group, you can request a FREE first session if anyone would like to experience the practice and learning and ask questions before registering.

Descriptions of the Practice Groups

FOUNDATIONS of EMPATHIC COMMunication

In the Foundations practice group, you work with the core distinctions, skills, and processes of empathic communication for building empathic community and culture in their lives and organizations. These skills come out of his Mediate Your Life training program, which is based in the international body of work of Compassionate Communication (Nonviolent Communication/NVC). You'll learn and practice how to apply these skills of emotional intelligence with yourself and others, including the ability for mindful self-connection in the midst of adversity, and using elements of empathic speaking and listening to deepen and strengthen connections and heal and transform conflict. The learning is experiential, practical, and practice-oriented, and you'll be applying these skills to working together through the challenges and difficulties of personal life, work situations, and relationships. The communication maps from the Mediate Your Life training program that you will learn are: The OFNR components and distinctions from the NVC work, Self-Empathy (SE) language practice, and the Self-Connection Practice (SCP) mindfulness practice.

John will work with your group for the first 4-8 weeks, depending on the number of people in your group (i.e. 4 people = 4 weeks, 8 people or more = 8 weeks). Each session with John for this group is 1.5 hours. He will also show you how to make video and audio recording of sessions, and provide learning materials and resources.

mindfulness and NAVIGATING/mediating Difficult Conversations

John will work with your group for the first 4-8 weeks, depending on the number of people in your group (i.e. 4 people = 4 weeks, 8 people or more = 8 weeks). Each session with John for this group is 1.5 hours. He will also show you how to make video and audio recording of sessions, and provide learning materials and resources.

The learning is experiential and practice oriented. The communication maps from the Mediate Your Life training program that you will learn are: The Enemy Image Process (EIP), the Mourn Celebrate Learn (MCL) process, and the Learning Cycle.
